Shelter During the Storms of Life
At times overwhelming forces rage against us, perhaps because of our own doing: we are caught in a storm that we cannot control or overcome. Through the pain and difficulty, we realize our weakness, selfishness, the shortness of our lives and how we have hurt ourselves and other. In short, we have recognized our sinfulness: "For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard." (NLT)
We despair! Our hearts cry out because we come to understand that "the wages (penalty) of sin is death." Death of everything about us: body and spirit. We may grasp at something, anything to give us life and peace, but this comes only from one source: faith in Jesus Christ, since "God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners." (NLT) We gain life because Christ gave his life. We are saved!
We are saved! But, we cannot earn salvation: "God saved you by his special favor when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it." (NLT) We are saved! But only through faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." (NLT)
